about

One of the most devastatingly sad songs I’ve ever learned. In this North Uist song, the woman laments that her little girl drowned in a loch and her husband was lost at sea off Haisgeir at the same time. There is a plant named ‘torran’ which grew in abundance on North Uist, in particular on Knockantorran, the hillock of torran. When I asked for help on Facebook to identify the plant I inadvertently sparked a debate – it could be either figwort or wild angelica, likely the latter.
