about

Thoughts are free, nobody can find them out, and prison walls cannot contain them. First published in 1780, the origins of this German song can be traced back as far as the 13th century. Sophie Scholl's father was imprisoned at the beginning of August 1942 for statements critical of Hitler. Sophie would stand besides the prison wall in the evening and play the tune on the recorder for her father, who was incarcerated there.
