about

The girl sits alone at home and she asks the snow if it’s falling on her lover’s face and hands and if he’s lying in the white field or in the dark forest. She begs the snow not to cover her lover’s hair and eyes – surely he cannot be dead, surely he will come home from the war! He might be outside her door right now and she had better wipe away the tears or she won’t be able to see him. In reality, she very likely knows or at least feels that she will never see him again. In 2014 Paul McCallum asked me to find two German WW I songs that showed that there was grief and loss on all sides for ‘Ceòl na Sìthe’ (Music of Peace), a concert in St Mary’s Church in Benbecula, recorded for BBC Radio nan Gàidheal for Remembrance Day.
