A young man has committed a crime and was sentenced to death. His lover went to the king to beg for his life and the king told her to write a song made up entirely of lies. She failed because in the last verse, she wrote about the cuckoo with his call ‘cuckoo’ – that, of course, was not a lie but the truth! Her lover was lost... I love storytelling and at the Scottish Crannog Centre, I work with the resident storyteller. This is one of the songs I frequently sing to accompany one of his stories.
